Julie Cockburn
Born: 1966 Lives: London Education: 1993-1996- Central St Martins School of Art and Design. BA Fine Art (Sculpture) 1992-1993- Chelsea School of Art Foundation Her work involves paintings, embroidering and reassembling photographs to deliver a meaningful present. Cockburn’s work is best defined by its craftsmanship and the way she transfers everyday object into works of art, through combinations of second-hand objects and creation labour. She uses techniques such as the child-like embroidered patterns that features on found photographs and printed images. This draws the viewers in to a sculpted journey of labour and creation. Cockburn’s work challenges the means by which things are seen and visually digested, by the way in which she shows the playful visual exploration of the materials she employs. In her work Cockburn introduces ideas to found objects that generate dialogue about modernity and art history, gender and identity, nature and urbanity and the relationship between the process and idea. |
Tranformation insipered by Juile Cockburn's work
I took a portrait picture and printed it out. Then I used magazines pages and colour to transform the picture. For this I was inspired by Juile Cockburn. Firstly I used blue colouring pencil to line his face,as it was a black and white picture his eyes didn't stand out enough so I decided to colour them in with a blue colouring pencil. Then I cut out some triangular shape from the magazines and stuck it inside the blue lines in a pattern like most of Cockburn's work.In my opinion the background was too plain so I used some of the pictures I took as a background. I focused on making the portrait feel more lively as I thought the painting was very dull and it certain parts did not stand out as well as I wanted it to. Additionally I used Photoshop to make the image stand out more. For this I focused mainly on the back ground,I used vibrant colours so that there is something else that can be seen instead of just the portrait. I used the filter to make the portrait red and then I coloured the triangle yellow. |
