The PORTRAIT OF A QUIET GIRL is inspired by The Yellow Wallpaper – Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 1892, which explored the struggles of isolation and self-expression. The story focused on a woman with depression and showed how she was treated by her husband. The story shows how woman were oppressed by men and how little was known about mental illness at the time. In the story the woman was stuck in a room and wasn’t allowed to go out resulting her feeling lonely and isolated which made her notice unusual things around her house which may have resulted in her madness. The PORTRAIT OF A QUIET GIRL puts an image behind all the text and shows how people can be themselves in their own environment where they know they won’t be judged. I like the way White has managed to use colour photography as usually isolation is shown through dark and images with no colour. Also the space around the photographs is packed and compacted which maybe to show how people with mental illness always have things going through their minds.

I believe the shoot was successful overall even though the first shoot didn't turn out right as the artist focused on mental health in an closed environment and i decided to experiment with how a person may feel when they are in public.
When editing the images i focused on getting the brightness and the contrast of the images right and giving the photographs a tight space like White does.
I believe the shoot was successful as it manages to show the madness and how isolated the person is which results in them doing strange things. |
