The phenomenon of home ... used to be an overwhelming and in exchangeable something to which we were subordinate and from which our way of life was oriented and directed.... Home nowadays is a distorted and perverted phenomenon. It is identical to a house; it can be anywhere. It is subordinate to us, easily measurable in numbers of money value. It can be exchanged like a pair of shoes.
Homelessness is the condition of people without a permanent residence, such as a house or apartment. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure and adequate housing. |
Andrew McNeil Andrew McNeil specialises in taking portrait photographs of homeless people which shows the difficulties they face in a daily basis. His work is in black and white which emphasis the living conditions aren’t great and the emotions they feel. He took these pictures in Cardiff. I believe he takes portrait of homeless people because he wants everyone to know that they aren’t dangerous, scary or junkies which are usually the words used by people to describe homeless people. Andrew McNeil He is a photographer who travels a lot so is used to seeing is used to seeing scenes of despair. But in this shoot he has focused on people in his home town of Cardiff. For the shoot he spent time with the people to get the best results.” I’d walk to where they hung out, buy them beer (never drugs) listen to their stories and their problems, drink tea with them and buy them food. “Gaining the trust from the people and listening to their stories has allowed McNeil to represent the people even better as he knew the struggles they had to go through and circumstances that made them end up in the streets…. |
For the response to McNeil’s work I decided to get people to frame how a homeless person would feel living in the street.
